Did you know that there are no fewer than 43 combinations?

— Katrien Heylen: Baginco

Barrier

Film or (greaseproof) paper are not always necessary. Your choice of inside finish depends on the kind of protection or barrier your product needs. Products like chocolate, soap, nuts, muffins, and so on need a higher-grade barrier which protects against damp, grease seepage, and air. What are the external influences from which you need to protect your products?

Sealability

The next question you must ask yourself is how you want to close your bags. For example, if you use closing strips a film is unnecessary. If you want to seal them, however, you will need a film. The heat of the sealing machine causes the film to melt and your bag is sealed up.

Transparency

If you opt for a film, you can choose either from transparent or non-transparent (metallised) film. This is a particularly important consideration in the case of window bags. If you use a window, you should of course choose the transparent version to show off your product. You can then opt to line your bag fully with film, or only the side with the window. If you decide just to line the side with the window, remember that your bag will not be sealable.

Biodegradable

Finally, transparent films are of two kinds: a ‘bio’ version (biodegradable), or a polypropylene film (PP). PP film is somewhat stronger than bio film, which is desirable if you are packing “heavier” or “sharper” products, like biscuits or crackers. Bio film is more fragile and provides less of a barrier, but on the other hand it’s biodegradable. Did you know that this film is manufactured from wood pulp and is 90% bio-based? That’s the highest percentage on the market.
